Shea butter has many virtues.<\/p>\n

Anti-irritant, stimulating the upper layers of the epidermis, shea acts as a protector.<\/p>\n

It is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, phytosterols, vitamins and, above all, unsaponifiables (around 5%), which give it an emollient and anti-inflammatory action that encourages the penetration of active ingredients such as unsaturated fats and naturally-occurring vitamins.<\/p>\n

Shea butter is extracted from the fruit of the shea tree, which grows mainly in the tree savannahs of West and Central Africa. The name ghariti means “butter tree” in Senegalese Wolof and is the origin of the French name “karit\u00e9”. <\/span><\/p>\n

The fruit, also known as shea, takes the form of dark green to brown ovoid clusters measuring between four and eight centimetres long and weighing between 10 and 57 g.<\/span><\/p>\n

A fleshy berry containing one or two hard, whitish almonds surrounded by a thin shell and pulp,<\/span> it isharvested by women between May-June and mid-September<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Shea butter is mainly used in cooking in Africa and in the chocolate industry in Europe (as a substitute for cocoa butter). <\/p>\n
