ORIGIN: FFL Morocco

What is Argan oil?

In south-west Morocco, Berber women mechanically press argan berry kernels after breaking them between two stones. The oil is extracted by cold pressing and is rich in essential fatty acids (EFAs) and antioxidants (vitamin E). With its subtle taste, it will enhance the flavors of your tagines, pastas and salads.

Unroasted virgin argan oil is beneficial for skin care (dry skin, sun protection, prevention of physiological skin aging), applied alone or in combination with virgin sweet almond oil and/or virgin olive oil.

Rich in vitamin E and unsaponifiables, it is recognized for its nourishing and skin-restructuring properties.

Its identity

INCI: Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil

Other names: Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Huile d’Argane, Huile d’Arganier, Arbre de fer, Olivier du Maroc.

Origin: Morocco

Botanical family: Sapotaceae

Part(s) used: Fruit (kernels)

Instructions for use

Storage: Argan oil should be stored in its tightly closed bottle, away from light and moisture.

Precautions : Argan oil is not recommended for people allergic to its components. No side effects or interactions with drugs or herbs have been reported. However, high levels of vitamin E suggest that argan oil may increase the effects of anticoagulants.

Its history

Made from the fruit of the argan tree, argan oil is rich in vitamin A, vitamin E, antioxidants and essential fatty acids.

Produced for centuries by Berber women in the Souss-Massa region of Morocco, argan oil was registered in 2009 by the European Union, at Morocco’s request, as an agricultural product protected by a geographical indication.

The practices and know-how associated with it are also part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage.

Today, there are two types of argan oil, depending on whether or not the kernels are roasted.

Darker, with a pronounced, nutty flavor, edible oil is roasted and used in the same way as conventional oil for food preparation. However, it should not be heated to high temperatures.

Lighter in color, cosmetic argan oil can be applied to the skin and hair.
